What is IPv6? (Explained like you would to your grandma)
📬 What is IPv6? (Explained like you would to your grandma)
🧩 The Internet is like a huge city…
Every house has an address, right? So the mailman knows where to deliver letters.
On the Internet, it’s the same: every device (computer, phone, printer, smart bulb…) has an IP address, which allows it to send and receive data.
📦 IPv4: the “classic” address
Until now, we’ve used IPv4, which creates addresses like:
192.168.1.1
Simple, right? But there’s a problem: IPv4 can create around 4 billion addresses… and we’re running out! Everything is connected today: fridges, TVs, watches… We need many more addresses.
🚀 IPv6: the new kind of address
That’s why IPv6 was born — a modern version that uses much longer numbers, like:
2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334
Looks complicated? A bit, but don’t worry grandma — computers understand it instantly!
Thanks to IPv6, we get:
- an almost infinite number of addresses
- faster performance in some cases
- a more modern Internet, ready for the future
🔍 IPv4 vs IPv6 (at a glance)
Feature | IPv4 | IPv6 |
---|---|---|
Format | 4 numbers separated by dots | 8 groups of numbers and letters, with “:” |
Example | 192.168.0.1 | 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334 |
Total addresses | Around 4 billion | Around 340 undecillion (huge number!) |
Year introduced | 1981 | 1998 (still rolling out today) |
Ease of reading | Easier for humans | More complex, but managed by devices |
🧠A simple example to understand
Think of IPv4 as a phonebook with 4 billion numbers.
But now we need a number for every person, object, and toaster.
IPv6 is a giant phonebook that never runs out!
❓Fun facts
- IPv6 won’t replace IPv4 right away — they’ll coexist for years.
- Some websites already use IPv6. But when you browse, you don’t notice — everything works as usual.
- Your smartphone probably already has an IPv6 address, even if you didn’t know!
